About the author

• Born in Enontekiö, Finnish Lapland, Nils-Aslak Valkeapää (1943–2001) was an artist, writer, musician and internationally known promoter of the indigenous Sámi culture who published eight collections of poetry in his native Sámi. Valkeapää became famous as a performer and recorder of traditional Sámi juoiggus (yoiking, a form of monophonic vocal music or chanting). He was awarded the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 1991 for his book Beaivi, áhcázan (’The sun, my father’). Valkeapää’s texts have been translated into 15 languages.
